Robotics for School Kids Level I (Age 10+)

1.INTRODUCTION

What is a ROBOT?

There is a misconception that a Robot is a replica of a human, because it portrays, behaves, acts and resembles human beings in appearance or performs functions in a humanlike manner. A robot is a virtual or mechanical artificial agent. In practice, it is usually an electro-mechanical machine which is guided by computer or electronic programming, and is thus able to do tasks on its own. It is also mechanized to reduce human efforts.

Some robots are built to look like people. They have arms, legs, a head and a body. Some even have faces and hair and wear clothes! Other robots are only an arm or hand, if that is all that is necessary to perform their work. In outer space, a robotic arm is usually all that is needed.

The people-type robots can be given "eyes" to see. Actually, the eyes are sensors to keep the robot from bumping into things. Sensors can be "ears," so the robot can obey commands, or sensors can be put into the robot's fingers so it can "feel" what it is holding.

But some robots can recognize cues from a person's behavior and respond to them. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

Robots are widely used in manufacturing, assembly and packing, transport, earth and space exploration, surgery, weaponry, laboratory research, and mass production of consumer and industrial goods.

Today, robots are useful for both work and entertainment, and they will be used for many more things in the future!

All of these are basically robots. They all are of different though.

Basics of a Level 1 Robot

The basic components of a Level 1 robot are as follows

1.The CHASIS:
This is the basic building block of a Robot on which the other components are placed. Chassis is the component that gives the robot its vigour and strength.

From the illustration here, you can see that the chassis forms the body of the Robot.

2.The MOTORS:
Motors form the electrical part of the Robot which generates the robot with power and energy to maneuver. Tyres are mounted on the motor providing mobility to the robot resembling the human legs

Working of a Motor:
When a current carrying conductor is applied to the magnetic field it experiences a force perpendicular to the field. This is the basic principle of a DC motor.

3.POWER SUPPLY:
The Motors need electricity to operate with the help of batteries, or using a constant power supply with speed, accuracy and reliability.

4.CONTROLLER:
The robot is controlled by a human operator. The operator uses the controller to control the robot. Depending on the number of functions controlled by the controller they are classified as 1 channel,2 channel etc.
